So who is Scott Speed? 10 Jun 2005
As Red Bulls third practice driver, Scott Speed becomes the first American to take part in a Formula One Grand Prix meeting since Michael Andretti in 1993.
Speed, a discovery of Red Bulls driver search programme in the US, is regarded as one of the brightest, rising stars in motorsport and is being widely tipped to become Americas next fully-fledged Formula One racer.
Speed, 22 and from San Jose, began his European single-seater career little more than two years ago, scoring two top ten places in the 2003 British Formula Three championship.
The following year was his breakthrough season, however, as he won both the international Formula Renault Eurocup and the German Formula Renault Cup, racking up 13 victories, 15 pole positions and 10 fastest race laps.
For 2005 Speed has progressed to the all-new GP2 series which is widely expected to serve as a final stepping stone to Formula One racing. Driving for the iSport International team, all is going well so far and he lies second in the standings as the series goes into its summer break.
Two successful Formula One tests have been enough to persuade Red Bull sporting director Christian Horner to give Speed official third driver outings in both Montreal and at his home race at Indianapolis.
