It’s been an interesting year to say the least. From the ‘spygate scandal,’ to the most dramatic season finale of recent years, 2007 had more than its fair share of thrills and spills. Alliances have been made, rookies have excelled, champions have stumbled and wars have been waged. All in all it’s been a rollercoaster ride and, not surprisingly, the Formula One world has had plenty to say about it…

Rubens Barrichello on Hondas’ newly-launched 2007 challenger: “I have no doubt that the new RA107 car is a better car than last year’s RA106. My aim is always to win races - it is the same for every driver. With Honda behind me, I am sure that there is the potential for more victories.”

Fernando Alonso on settling in at McLaren: “I felt a little nervous at first, but that is just human nature, I didn’t know the car, I didn’t know the team. Now I am very comfortable with the MP4-22 and over the winter I have made it my business to get to know every single member of the team.”

Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen on how he nearly missed out on victory in Melbourne: “On one occasion - just about ten laps before the end the race - I almost fell asleep! I got distracted, my concentration levels dropped a bit and I locked the wheels and took turn number 3 slightly too wide: even without radio I knew that they were saying: 'Kimi, wake up!’”

Heikki Kovalainen responds to criticism of his Grand Prix debut from Renault team principal Flavio Briatore: “I was not happy with my race. I didn’t need to be told that it was not good - I knew myself.”

Ferrari CEO Jean Todt on his best moment as a team principal: “Suzuka 2000, when Michael (Schumacher) won that drivers’ title that Ferrari had been chasing for 21 years. With Michael on the podium, we told ourselves our lives would never be the same again - and so it proved.”

BMW Motorsport Director, Mario Theissen on Formula One racing’s green future:
“We should not call it ‘green’ Formula One or ‘green’ motorsport. We should emphasize that we see a chance to pioneer future technologies for road cars, which make road cars more environmentally friendly. But motorsport itself will never be ‘green’. It should be thought of as a pioneering role.”

FIA President Max Mosley on ‘customer cars’: “To me it's obvious you should have the customer cars. Whether you have four cars of a given make or two on the grid, it doesn't seem to matter. They will all look completely different anyway.”

Frank Williams on ‘customer cars’: “The learning curve is very painful. Very painful! So there is no way to allow a team with effectively no history in Formula One to spend the minimum amount of money and make other teams lose positions. This is not acceptable.”

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton on being so competitive, so soon into his Formula One career: “Going into your first season you don’t expect to be joint leading the drivers’ championship. It was only last year I was watching the Grands Prix. It is unreal.”

Takuma Sato on finishing eighth for Super Aguri in Spain: “It’s fantastic. Our target this year was scoring a point, so the first step, job done.”

Toyota’s Jarno Trulli on Robert Kubica’s big accident in Canada: “I was struggling with tyre graining and lack of grip. Robert was quicker and I gave him the left-hand side of the track. The last time I saw him in my mirrors he was on that side, then I just got hit at the back and I have no idea what happened.”

Spyker stand-in Markus Winkelhock on leading the European Grand Prix: “To lead a Formula One race is something nobody can take away from you - you have it for your whole life. I am really happy about it - I was leading my home Grand Prix!”

Red Bull reserve driver Robert Doornbos tells Formula1.com a secret: “I spent a couple of hours at a police station when I was 12 for lighting up some fireworks in a shopping mall and as punishment I had to do 12 hours of community work. Oops!”

American Scott Speed bows out of Formula One racing after Toro Rosso replace him with Sebastian Vettel for the rest of the season: “It’s been a great ride, but I’m coming home. Over the past five years I have had the privilege of driving at the some of the most challenging and exciting racing circuits in the world. It has made me stronger, smarter and a better racer.”

Williams driver Nico Rosberg on raising the team’s pace: “We have definitely improved and it’s not thanks to other people showing poor performance, it’s because we are doing a good job!”

Toro Rosso co-owner Gerhard Berger on ditching Vitantonio Liuzzi for 2008: “Tonio is a nice guy, but the atmosphere in the team has been quite strange this year - the team were not happy with the drivers and vice versa. So we wanted a change”

Three-time world champion Niki Lauda on the pit-lane incident between Hamilton and Alonso in Hungary: “What we saw in Budapest was normal business in team mate relations, as race drivers are groomed to be egocentric, spoiled brats. The only problem is that you have to do it in an intelligent way so you don’t get caught, like Alonso.”

Renault’s Heikki Kovalainen on his debut podium: “I have been there before but not in Formula One. It felt very good and now that the spell seems broken I want to be up there more often.”

BMW Sauber team principal Mario Theissen on the FIA’s verdict against McLaren: “Some say the penalty is too grave, others that it is not grave enough. In my view the verdict gives the signal that was intended - not only to the team as a whole but to the single individual - that what was going on is unacceptable.”

Honda’s Jenson Button on his less-than satisfactory season: “It’s been a tough year - probably the toughest of my whole career. It’s done now, it’s behind you. It’s about not making the same mistakes again. If you make the same mistakes again, you are a fool. It’s that simple.”

Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Vettel on his lapse of judgement during the Japanese Grand Prix that dumped him - and Red Bull’s Mark Webber - out of the race: “It did take two or three days until I was able to breath normally again. We both were in fantastic positions and my guess is that we would have brought that two-three position home. It was inconceivable how hard that was to swallow.”

Webber on the Fuji Speedway incident: “I could not believe what happened here. This was not just about some dents but about two destroyed cars. If I had been fortunate he would have hit Lewis - but he hit me! Unbelievable.”

Renault’s Giancarlo Fisichella on talk of retirement: “No way! I am as physically fit as a young boy - and I have the experience…”

FIA president Max Mosley on not stripping the McLaren drivers of their points after the team were found guilty of breaking the International Sporting Code: “It was a decision of logic versus emotion. Logic would have demanded to slash all points, but emotion was not willing to wreck such an incredible championship with an armchair judgment.”

Alexander Wurz announces his retirement: “In such a hard fought environment as Formula One, I have always maintained that if you have a moment’s doubt about what you are doing, then it is time to stop. Privately I began to have these thoughts earlier this year and so have decided that now is the time.”

Kimi Raikkonen on his championship joy: “I am so happy it almost hurts! This is like a dream come true. This year I really enjoyed Formula One more than ever before.”

Lewis Hamilton on losing out to the Finn: “Obviously I am pretty disappointed. However I have to put the result into perspective, this is only my first year in Formula One and overall it has just been phenomenal. I am still very young and have plenty more years in me to achieve my dream of becoming world champion.”

Three-time world champion Niki Lauda on Lewis Hamilton’s debut season: “He was fighting for the championship until the last race. A rookie en route to become world champion. A story almost too good to be true. His time will come.”

Red Bull’s uber-designer Adrian Newey on the espionage scandal: “My personal opinion is that anything anyone can take with them in their head is fair game, but anything that is written or in electronic format is not.

Alonso on leaving McLaren: “Since I was a boy I had always wanted to drive for McLaren, but sometimes in life things do not work out. I continue to believe that McLaren is a great team. I know there have been suggestions of favouritism, but in the end I was always provided with an equal opportunity to win.”

New Honda team principal Ross Brawn on his first week at the Japanese team: “I came here and found people who are very keen and very ambitious for the future. Their enthusiasm was almost palpable. I did not have to face a demoralized workforce - that would have been disappointing.”

Force India co-owner Dr Vijay Mallya on his aspirations for the squad: “I have given (the team) one very clear objective - at the 2010 Indian Grand Prix Force India has to be on the podium.”
