The heat and humidity of the Sepang paddock attracted singers Wyclef Jean and Fat Boy Slim, both of whom were due to play in concert here, while former English rugby legend Rory Underwood, who is part Malaysian, was an ambassadorial guest of Tony Fernandes at Lotus Racing.

Shah Rukh Khan, the most famous of Bollywood’s superstar actors, was down at HRT with fellow thespian Manisha Lamba, while multiple world rally champion Carlos Sainz was in town to watch son Carlos Jnr race in Formula BMW and IRL team owner Kevin Kalkhoven was in attendance with his other business, Cosworth.

In Saturday’s Formula BMW encounter Singapore’s Richard Bradley beat Sainz by just under four seconds after they qualified first and second for Eurasia Motorsport and Eurointernational respectively.

Meritus’ impressive rookie Oscar Tunjo from Colombia qualified third after being fastest in practice, and finished fourth behind E-Rain Racing’s Fahmi Ilyas. Fourth fastest qualifier Kotaro Sakurai from the Philippines spun off.
