With the location of the Korean race one of the most secluded on the calendar, the drivers had a rare opportunity to catch up with one another on Thursday night. The majority - including title rivals Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton - took advantage of being off the beaten path and met up to have a bite to eat under the banner of the Grand Prix Drivers Association.

‘Some F1 bonding,’ was how Toro Rosso’s Daniel Ricciardo described it on Twitter, while Marussia’s Timo Glock reported ‘good stories’ and plenty of laughs. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall…

A visit to Korea for fans this year certainly wouldn’t be complete without PSY, the Korean superstar recording artist behind global hit Gangnam Style, which has racked up almost 300 million hits on YouTube since its July debut.

The famous rapper was not only announced as an ambassador for the race by organisers, but will also perform an exclusive concert for grandstand ticket holders at the track after Sunday’s Grand Prix.

“I look forward to bringing Gangnam Style to the glamorous world of F1, and welcome everyone to Korea for this great race!” said PSY, who has taught his extraordinary dance moves to the likes of Britney Spears and Ellen DeGeneres.

There were celebrations in the paddock on Saturday evening, as friends and colleagues from up and down the pit lane gathered to wish Peter Sauber a happy 69th birthday.

It has been a momentous weekend all round for the Swiss team founder, whose eponymous squad joined the grid in 1991, after he finally handed over the reins as team principal to Sauber CEO Monisha Kaltenborn on Thursday, making her the first woman in history to lead a Formula One team.
