Michael Schumacher has decided to pull out of a football training session with top English club Manchester United after injuring his knee whilst playing for his local team at home in Switzerland.

Schumacher was due to visit United on Wednesday for the session, which was to be followed by a penalty competition at the team's Old Trafford ground. However, doctors have advised the six-times world champion to rest his knee for a couple of weeks.

"He doesn't want to go there and be a bit cautious," Schumacher's spokeswoman Sabine Kehm told news agency Reuters. "If he does do it, he wants to do it at full speed."

Schumacher is not due to resume Formula One testing with Ferrari until January, but the United training session was just one of a number of public appearances scheduled during his 'winter break'. In December he will be back in the cockpit of his F2003 to take on a Eurofighter military jet plane in a straight-line speed contest.

Meanwhile, Ferrari played host to two top footballers on Monday when Ciro Ferrara and Pavel Nedved of Italian club Juventus visited the team's Marenello headquarters. They were shown around by Stefano Domenicali, Ferrari's Director of Formula One Racing Activities.
