Testing roundup - more rain in Spain 08 Dec 2003

Formula One World Championship, Rd16, Japanese Grand Prix, Suzuka , Japan, 10 October 2003

Last week's testing drew to a close on Friday with another day of heavy rain at Jerez. It was again Ferrari who dominated the timesheets, with Luca Badoer, Felipe Massa and Luciano Burti first, second and third, as the world champions completed their technical programme of tyre and electronics development.

Nick Heidfeld was fourth fastest, ending his first week of testing with Jordan on a positive note. He was joined by Ralph Firman, testing for the first time since his recent demonstration run at the Macau Grand Prix. Firman was seventh quickest, behind the BARs of Takuma Sato and Jenson Button, around a second down on Heidfeld.

"The track began to dry during the last hour and at the very end of the session both drivers had a couple of laps on standard wet tyres," explained Jordan's Head of Race and Test Engineering, James Robinson. "Heidfeld's lap time was quite encouraging particularly as he was restricted by engine mileage and he may not have been on the track at its best with the most appropriate tyre. Firman experienced more and more grip with each lap but he was learning the circuit and unfortunately the session ended as the track was at its driest.

"Despite the frustrations of the weather conditions, the test has been positive and we have made progress with Heidfeld getting used to setting up the Jordan and how the team operates and we have also carried out some important analysis for our 2004 control systems."
