Shell has provided Ferrari with a brand-new fuel with which to contest the Australian Grand Prix. It is an evolution of the fuel that was used by the team in Japan at the end of the 2002 Formula One season. The Shell and Ferrari engineers have been working closely together to develop the fuel over the winter break.

Michael Schumacher was full of praise for the development work carried out by Shell. "It's a big effort," he said. "They've been unlucky because of tyres - tyres are the big discussion because you really build up performance in a quick and substantial way whereas in fuel it's small margins. I think, due to them (Shell), we can call our engine one of the best engines, or very close to the best engines, because they push very hard."

With teams unable to refuel their cars between Saturday's qualifying session and the race, the question of fuel levels and fuel efficiency has been brought to the forefront of all fuel manufacturers' minds.
