Welcome to Grand Prix day here at Hockenheim in Germany, where conditions are expected to be scorchingly hot by the start of the race at 2pm this afternoon.

As of 9am this morning the ambient temperature had already reached 27 degrees Celsius, and there is more to come. By lunchtime forecasters confidently predict 32 degrees.

All of the teams have been well aware of this possibility all weekend and have shaped their tyre and refuelling strategies accordingly. However, it won't be until the race gets underway that it will finally become clear whether Michael Schumacher, for instance, was right in opting for harder compound Bridgestone tyres in the belief that they will last better is such conditions than the softer compound Japanese tyres or rival Michelin's wares.

Altogether it promises to be a very tough race.
