Focus - mindful Coulthard edges Raikkonen 26 Sep 2003
David Coulthard flew out to America early for the 2003 United States Grand Prix. He went to last weekend's Indy Racing League finale in California to watch his old buddy Gil de Ferran in action, before flying onto Indianapolis on Wednesday.
As yet, there was nothing different about his weekend. But he had something new up his sleeve, and it was only after he out-qualified team mate Kimi Raikkonen by 0.3s on Friday - a mini victory for the Scot - that it became apparent.
Coulthard has struggled in one-lap qualifying this year and, new for the US Grand Prix, he has a sports psychologist hanging onto his coat tails. A few harsh words from McLaren boss Ron Dennis after the Italian Grand Prix two weeks ago, when Ron criticised his lack of pace over one lap, prompted DC to sort his psychological state of mind.
Out-pacing Raikkonen was the perfect tonic and might go some way to stopping the rumours in the Indy paddock that Juan Pablo Montoya could replace him at McLaren next season...
