The Red Bull Racing Formula One team hopes to stay on Michelin tyres next season, maintaining the supply used by Jaguar during the 2004 world championship.

“The team is in negotiations with Michelin for next year,” confirmed Red Bull Racing team principal Tony Purnell. “The 2005 (Jaguar) car was designed around Michelin tyres and we are hoping to continue that relationship.”

Purnell insisted that the whole Jaguar sale process had made only minimal impact on development of the team’s 2005 car, with Ford having continued to invest in facilities right up until the sale to Red Bull.

“A going concern we have been – it’s been business as usual,” he said, explaining that there had been no relaxing of the team’s wind tunnel programme. “The elements and ingredients are in place to allow the new owners to compete next year.”

As a result, Purnell said he was confident that Red Bull Racing’s 2005 challenger would form a strong foundation for the team’s first season under new ownership. “The RB1 will a good solid car for next year,” he commented.

Finally, with regards to sponsorship, although some original Jaguar backers may transfer their deals to Red Bull Racing, Purnell said that he expected the new team owners to largely look for a new set of sponsors.
