The Williams team announced on Tuesday that Antonio Pizzonia has been retained as an official test driver for the 2004 season. He joins Spaniard Marc Gene as the BMW-powered squad's second full-time tester.

Pizzonia, 23, performed a similar role for the team in 2002, before an ill-fated race drive with Jaguar last season, which saw the Brazilian dropped mid-season in favour of Justin Wilson.

On his return to the Williams fold, Pizzonia said, "It feels great to be back working with everyone at the BMW WilliamsF1 Team. My long term future in Formula One is as a race driver, but my aim for this year is to do everything I can as a test driver to help the team win the World Championship."

Williams begin a five-day test session at Jerez in Spain on Wednesday.
