United States Grand Prix organisers have given fans the chance to drive the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course in their own car. However, you’ll have to be quick, as the event takes place today and is open only to those renewing their tickets for next year’s race.

The USGP Ticket Renewal Drivearound, as it has been dubbed by organisers, is scheduled for 1600-2000 (EST, local time). Anyone renewing their ticket and holding a valid driver’s license can take to the 13-turn circuit on which their Formula One heroes raced on Sunday.

“We’re pleased to offer this special incentive to our loyal United States Grand Prix fans,” said Joie Chitwood, Indianapolis Motor Speedway senior vice president, business affairs. “Driving around the circuit just a day after a legend like Michael Schumacher will be quite a thrill, so fans should bring a camera or video recorder to capture the memories while getting excited about the 2005 USGP.”

Nearly a quarter of a million people flocked into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway over the four days of the 2004 meeting. On Thursday 20,000 undertook the pitwalk, followed by 40,000 for Friday practice and 60,000 for qualifying. A 120,000 crowd on raceday brought the overall unofficial total to 240,000.
