The Williams team have decided to give their second test driver, Antonio Pizzonia, a race drive at this weekend’s German Grand Prix, replacing the injured Ralf Schumacher.

Williams third driver Marc Gene stood in for Schumacher at the last two races, but after outpacing the Spaniard in testing last week, Pizzonia will make his first Grand Prix appearance for Williams this weekend.

“I am very happy to have been given this opportunity by the BMW WilliamsF1 Team and I will do my very best to assist the team in scoring some points,” said the Brazilian. “My total concentration is now on the forthcoming race weekend, and I have a clear preparation plan prior to Hockenheim.”

Pizzonia’s last competitive Formula One outing was at the 2003 British Grand Prix, his last of 11 races for Jaguar that season before he was replaced by Justin Wilson. His best finish that year was a ninth place in Austria.
