In Friday practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix, David Coulthard will forsake his famous Scottish Saltire flag helmet for the winning design from a recent competition organised by McLaren.

The team asked members of the public to come up with a new livery for Coulthard’s crash helmet and the driver himself personally picked out and met with the winner, Dmitry Merkulov, on a recent trip to Moscow.

“It may not be a big surprise to those who have seen me carry a Scottish flag on my helmet for all my racing days, I went for the one that was a combination of my tartan and the lion rampant which is also a flag of Scotland,” commented Coulthard. “I went for this one, which I liked the best, because it combined the key elements with an interesting and very different design.”

Look out for pictures of the winning design on Friday when Coulthard, who lays seventh in the current drivers’ table, debuts the new helmet at the Hungaroring.
