Spa goes back to the 1970s with Renault 29 Aug 2004
French team help to recapture that swinging spirit
On Saturday evening at Spa the Renault motor home was the place to be, when redecoration and music catapulted the Formula One community back to the golden era of the 1970s.
That was, of course, a time when Formula One racing was just venturing out on the path to becoming a global enterprise; when drivers were playboys; and when Bernie Ecclestone was to be seen wearing the latest drop-dead gorgeous ties straight out of New Yorks newly-hip Greenwich Village.
And for one evening, that time returned on Saturday. It looked as if the legendary Studio 54 had been brought back to life again in the remote Belgian hills around Spa, with disco, girls galore and sofas you could get lost in.
Dressed up in the spirit of easy listening, the girls sweetened the evening, while master of the house Flavio Briatore and his two top drivers Fernando Alonso and Jarno Trulli oversaw proceedings. And for old times sake Bernie Ecclestone even dropped in briefly for a spot of reminiscing.
