Newly-crowned Formula 3000 champion Vitantonio Liuzzi will test for Sauber at Jerez next month, the team has announced. Liuzzi, who clinched the 2004 F3000 title at Spa last Saturday, will get behind the wheel of the C23 on September 16.

"While there have been several indications in the past showing that Vitantonio has a lot of talent, what has impressed me most is the way in which he has been dominating Formula 3000 this year,” said team boss Peter Sauber. “During this test we want to get a feeling for how he is able to apply his skills to a Formula 1 car."

Liuzzi followed race winner and team mate Robert Doornbos home at the Belgian F3000 round to become the 20th, and last, champion since the series, which will be replaced by GP2 in 2005, began in 1985. If he can win the final round at Monza next weekend the Italian will equal the all-time series win record held jointly by Juan Pablo Montoya and Nick Heidfeld.

Meanwhile, Sauber have also revealed that they plan to invite one or two other young drivers to test for them in the near future. Names, dates and venues are to be confirmed.
