Williams have confirmed that their chief designer, Gavin Fisher, has suffered serious injuries in an off-road motorcycle accident in southern California.

Fisher, 40, is in a stable condition in hospital south of Los Angeles following surgery. However, he is not expected to be fit enough to return home to the UK for around three weeks.

In Fisher’s absence, Mark Loasby, a senior design engineer employed at Williams for over 14 years, will take over his role on a temporary basis.

“I spoke to Gavin over the weekend, and thankfully the surgery he underwent immediately after his accident appears to have been successful,” Williams technical director Sam Michael told the team’s official site.
