Renault wow the crowds in Moscow 29 Aug 2005
Renault drivers Fernando Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella brought the sights and sounds of Formula One racing to Moscow at the weekend. Crowds estimated at more than 100,000 people gathered beneath the walls of the Kremlin to see the 2005 world championship leaders in action.
Legendary rally driver Jean Ragnotti first thrilled spectators in Renault's Megane Trophy and Clio RS cars, before Alonso and Fisichella took to the track to race specially-prepared Megane Trophy machines to entertain the onlookers in the heart of the Russian capital.
The afternoon ended with the main event - the Formula One demonstration. The crowds - which had been gathering since early morning - thrilled to the noise of the V10 engine as Alonso and Fisichella completed five laps each of the city-centre circuit in last year's race-winning R24, demonstrating the noise and spectacle of Formula One to amazed Muscovites.
Alonso was delighted with the spectacle: I loved coming back to Moscow - it is a great city, and it was amazing to see so many people along the side of the circuit. The people here have an amazing passion for Formula One, and this was a mega show for them!
Fisichella was equally impressed by his first visit to the city: This was my first time in Moscow, and I was so impressed by it. We saw Red Square, and it was quite a unique way to discover the Kremlin - from a Formula One car! I hope we will be coming back here soon.
It was Renaults second large Formula One show in Russia. The first, in October 2003, was also held by the team at Vorobjevy Gory near Moscow State University and attracted more than 50,000 people.
