Turkey ask to withdraw appeal over fine 24 Oct 2006

The Turkish Automobile Sports Federation, TOSFED, has asked to withdraw an appeal against the fine imposed by the FIA relating to podium ceremony irregularities at this year's Turkish Grand Prix.

The FIA accepted half of the US$5 million fine from race organisers MSO earlier this month, saying the outstanding sum is still owed by TOSFED. The appeal hearing is scheduled to take place at the International Court of Appeal in Paris on Tuesday, November 7.

The fine related to the Istanbul podium ceremony, in which Mr Mehmet Ali Talat was invited to present the winner’s trophy and introduced as president of the Turkish Cypriot ‘state’, which is only recognised by Turkey.

According to the FIA, the Judges of the International Court of Appeal will consider TOSFED’s request to withdraw the appeal at the first available hearing.
