Kuala Lumpur’s Sepang International Circuit (SIC) is to host an official Formula One test in March, giving the teams a chance to reacquaint themselves with the track ahead of this year’s Malaysian Grand Prix.

With a three-week break between the season-opening Australian race on March 18 and the Malaysian round on April 8, the test means the teams will be able to push on with development of their 2007 machines without the expense of shipping cars back to Europe.

“It (the test) is further recognition of our efforts to make the circuit in Sepang as a hub of motorsports in Asia,” SIC press officer Azhar Ghazali told Malaysian newspaper The Star.

“Almost all the F1 teams are based in Europe and it would make sense for them to commit their personnel to test the cars in Sepang instead of flying them back to the other side of the globe.

“Most of the F1 teams also have their own test drivers, but the main drivers are expected to take part in the testing session in Sepang because of the official status.”

The Sepang test is scheduled for March 27-29.
