Doornbos still chasing STR race seat 18 Jan 2007
Robert Doornbos is still looking to secure a race seat with Toro Rosso for the new season, after competing in the last three Grands Prix of 2006 with sister team Red Bull Racing.
Doornbos took the place of Christian Klien at those races, but knew he had no chance of retaining the seat due to the imminent arrival of Mark Webber. However, with the Red Bull-owned Toro Rosso squad still to confirm their 2007 line-up, the Dutchman hasnt ruled out a race return.
Basically, nothing has really changed as I still target a race seat at Toro Rosso, Doornbos told his official website, as he updated fans on recent developments. But I also keep my other options open.
Doornbos winning a Toro Rosso race seat would require the Italian team to drop one of their 2006 drivers, Vitantonio Liuzzi or Scott Speed, both of who impressed during their first full season of Formula One racing.
If that doesnt happen, Doornbos says he still has an offer to continue as an official test driver with Red Bull, a role he could combine with racing in another series in the United States.
