Toro Rosso driver Sebastian Vettel has announced he will participate in this year’s Race of Champions event. The annual contest, which sees world-renowned drivers compete in a variety of machinery, will take place in December at London’s recently reopened Wembley stadium.

Vettel, who finished fourth in October’s Chinese Grand Prix, will team up with seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher for the event. As ‘Team Germany’, the pair will contest the Nations Cup together.

“I have always watched The Race of Champions on television every year and dreamed about participating one day,” said Vettel. “It’s fantastic to be invited; I’m so happy. To represent Team Germany together with Michael Schumacher is a great honour.”

The young German was just four years-old when Schumacher made his Formula One debut in 1991. The pair never competed against each other as Schumacher retired in 2006, just before Vettel’s maiden Formula One outing during the 2007 season.

“I really look forward to teaming up with Sebastian for the Race of Champions,” said Schumacher. “I have known Sebastian for a long time, having given him a trophy in a karting race when he was still a boy, and I remember being impressed by his drive. I still am, after his debut in F1 this year, and I am sure we will have a lot of fun together.”

Up to 80,000 fans are expected at the British stadium when the action gets underway on December 16. Renault’s Heikki Kovalainen, Red Bull’s David Coulthard and Honda’s Jenson Button will also drive at the event.
