Second Honda test for Andretti 02 Feb 2007
IndyCar Series driver Marco Andretti will join Honda for another Formula One test in Spain next week. The American will get behind the wheel at Jerez on Wednesday and Thursday (7-8 February).
In his debut Formula One outing with the Japanese team last December, Andretti impressed with his apparent potential and now Honda are interested to see how he performs during a more comprehensive two-day programme.
"I am obviously very pleased to have been invited back, said Andretti. I felt that I did a good job in December but on the first day you spend more time getting used to the car and familiarising yourself with the circuit. When I get in the car this time, I am sure I will be able to hit the ground running. I'm looking forward to it."
Andrettis first test was awarded in recognition of his achievements in the Honda-powered IndyCar Series last year. He had an outstanding first season, winning one race, in addition to finishing second in the Indianapolis 500 and being named 'Rookie of the Year'.
With Jenson Button and Christian Klien due to focus on development of Hondas new RA107 chassis at Jerez next week, the team will have completed all meaningful running with last year's RA106 car, presenting the ideal chance for a further test with Andretti.
"Given the potential that he has demonstrated and the availability of last year's RA106, we saw Jerez as a great opportunity to put him back in the car, said Gil de Ferran, the Honda teams sporting director. We look forward to seeing his progress with a more specific programme."
Andretti comes from a famous racing family. Father Michael competed for McLaren in 1993, while grandfather Mario was world champion back in 1978.
