Nico Rosberg was quickest during the first day of testing in Barcelona on Tuesday, as Williams and Spyker again chose to run in Spain rather than alongside their rivals in Bahrain. Rosberg clocked a best of 1m 21.624s - over eight-tenths of a second quicker than his team mate Alexander Wurz.

Rosberg was also the most productive runner in Spain, after completing an impressive 105 laps in the FW29. The German spent the day testing the team’s aero upgrade for the season’s opening race in Melbourne in March. Second-placed Wurz covered 81 laps, as he worked on mapping and set-up. Both race drivers will again be in action on Wednesday.

Spyker, meanwhile, fielded four drivers during the day, as they conducted race simulations and concentrated their testing programme on improving the aerodynamic efficiency of the F8-VII.

The Dutch squad's race drivers Christijan Albers and Adrian Sutil were first out in the morning, finishing in third and fourth respectively. The pair completed their allotted programme of set-up work and evaluation, covering a total of 118 laps. They will both test for a full day on Wednesday.

“We did some set-up work and new tyre runs, plus checking and finding balance,” explained Sutil. “It was effectively the first proper day of testing at Barcelona as last time out we had to run through initial programmes, but now you can really see the benefit of the work we put in, in Valencia. The tyres are working much more effectively on the first few laps."

In the afternoon two of Spyker’s test drivers, Fairuz Fauzy and Giedo van der Garde took over driving duties. While Fauzy completed a full race simulation without any problems, van der Garde’s mileage was limited to just four installation laps after a precautionary engine change. The testers completed the timesheets, with Fauzy in fifth and van der Garde sixth.

Testing continues in Barcelona on Wednesday.
