With the early fog finally beginning to clear, Renault’s 2008 challenger took to the track at Valencia late on Monday morning. Behind the wheel was the man charged with putting the team back on the podium this season, former world champion Fernando Alonso.

There was a media scrum around the Renault garage as Alonso and the R28 emerged for the first time, the car sporting a rather unusual-looking front wing with a pronounced spoon-shaped lower profile below its nose.

Following this week’s Spanish test, the R28 will get its official launch at a special ceremony in the French capital, Paris, next Thursday.

Improved visibility meant Williams were also able to resume work with their new car, the Toyota-powered FW30, following its debut earlier in the day with German test driver Nico Hulkenberg in the cockpit.

Renault and Williams will be joined by the other teams at Valencia from Tuesday, with testing continuing until Thursday.
