Senna samples Yas Marina as Abu Dhabi track nears completion 18 Sep 2009
With the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix just weeks away, racing driver Bruno Senna completed the first official lap of the newly-built Yas Marina Circuit in a Formula One car on Thursday.
Sennas outing was part of an official ceremony, which saw property developer Aldar Properties PJSC hand over the track to venue operator Abu Dhabi Motorsports Management (ADMM).
His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, attended the event, alongside ADMM Chairman, HE Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak and Aldar Chairman, HE Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh. As well as watching Senna, the party took time to inspect the track and its facilities.
We congratulate Aldar Properties on delivering one of the most sophisticated motorsport circuits ever built anywhere in the world, which will serve as an international centre of motorsport excellence, said Al Mubarak. Yas Marina Circuit is an impressive example of the home-grown initiatives taking place in Abu Dhabi.
Al Sayegh added: "This is a significant milestone for Aldar Properties and Abu Dhabi, demonstrating the Emirates ability to deliver a world-class project of this magnitude in record time. It is my great honour to handover this spectacular circuit to Abu Dhabi Motorsports Management and look forward to the inaugural Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
ADMM also announced on Thursday that they have signed an agreement with Takatof, the volunteer programme of the Emirates Foundation for Philanthropy, for the provision of up to 900 volunteers to work in key hospitality-related positions over the course of the Grand Prix weekend.
This mutually beneficial partnership provides a valuable platform for Emiratis, enabling them to engage with a high profile international audience and world class event, which is a truly learning experience, explained ADMM CEO Richard Cregan.
It will be the first of many Yas Marina Circuit events that will require the commitment of local volunteers and allows us to be represented by the rich warmth and hospitality of the UAE. This type of community engagement is an important objective for ADMM and we are confident that the volunteer experience will be extremely valuable.
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix takes place at Yas Marina from October 30 to November 1.
