Montezemolo: Championship in Ferraris hands 21 May 2012
Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo has told the companys Formula One team that each and every member must deliver if they are to stand any chance of winning the 2012 world championship.
Ferrari have experienced mixed fortunes in the first part of the year. Fernando Alonso has taken one victory and shares the lead in the driver standings, but the F2012 has generally struggled for pace and the Italian team lie fourth in the constructors championship.
The championship is in our own hands, Di Montezemolo said in an open letter to staff in the build-up to this weekends Monaco Grand Prix. (It) is very open and so far, there has not been one dominant force.
Di Montezemolo also highlighted the need for both his drivers to produce results. It follows continuing media speculation over Felipe Massas future with Ferrari, the Brazilian having scored just two points to Alonsos 61 this year.
A series of circumstances and the work done here to improve the car, as well as Alonsos great ability, has led to us leading the championship after five rounds, he continued. We must capitalize on that, with each one of us giving our very best at home and at the race track, including Massa who must bring home the results we expect from him.
Ferrari are chasing their first drivers championship since Kimi Raikkonens triumph in 2007 and their first constructors crown since the Finn and team mate Massa drove the F2008 to glory back in 2008.
Winning the championship depends only and exclusively on ourselves: on our ability, our creativity, our determination and our desire to show that we are the best, concluded Di Montezemolo.
