Mercedes have said that they welcome the opportunity to explain their recent tyre test with Pirelli following the news that Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, will bring the matter before its International Tribunal.

An initial FIA investigation revealed that Mercedes’ 1000-kilometre tyre test, conducted in Barcelona in May using a 2013 car, may have breached F1 regulations which limit in-season testing.

A statement issued by Mercedes on Thursday said: "Mercedes-Benz acknowledges the decision of the FIA to take the matter of the Pirelli Test before the International Tribunal.

"We welcome the opportunity to explain the full facts of the Pirelli Test in an open and transparent manner at the International Tribunal.

"Sporting integrity is of primary importance to Mercedes-Benz and we have the utmost confidence in the due process of the FIA."

The International Tribunal is part of a new judicial system established by the FIA in 2010. Comprising a 12-man panel, its remit includes ruling on cases that cannot be dealt with by race stewards.

In this case, race stewards in Monaco sent a report to the FIA after Mercedes were protested by rivals Red Bull and Ferrari. Ferrari also participated in a Pirelli test earlier this season, but the FIA has confirmed that this did not contravene the rules as a 2011 car was used.

No date has yet been set for Mercedes' case to be heard.
