Daniel Ricciardo is testing for Red Bull at Silverstone on Thursday afternoon and he prepared for it in the best possible fashion - by topping the morning timesheet for his current team, Toro Rosso.

Race drivers are permitted to participate in this week’s young driver session to test the revised Pirelli tyres being introduced at next weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix and Red Bull have taken the chance to evaluate Ricciardo, who could replace the departing Mark Webber for 2014.

The Australian, who faces competition for the Red Bull race seat from Toro Rosso team mate Jean-Eric Vergne and Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen, set the morning pace in the STR8, a second up on Antonio Felix da Costa in the Red Bull.

With Ricciardo being given a separate time for his Red Bull run, early in the afternoon he held the unusual distinction of filling both first and second places on a test timesheet.

Third fastest in the morning was Force India hopeful James Calado, followed by Williams racer Pastor Maldonado, McLaren tester Oliver Turvey and Lotus third driver Davide Valsecchi.

Full report to follow at the end of the day.
