It hasn’t been a perfect afternoon for reigning champion Sebastian Vettel. Dropping out of qualifying in Q2 is far from ideal but with Spa being a track where a driver’s abilities can really make a difference, all is not lost for Vettel. The young German reflects on his Saturday in Belgium…

Q: Sebastian, what happened this afternoon?
Sebastian Vettel:
It’s very simple - we were not fast enough.

Q: Why is that?
SV:
I would also like to know that. In the morning it was going pretty smoothly but in the afternoon it did not click.

Q: What did your team mate Mark Webber do differently to make it into Q3?
SV:
I wouldn’t know but my guess is not much. In the end it was pretty tight. One hundredth is pretty tight but if you are the last who is slower by one hundredth than you are out. It is as simple as that.

Q: Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has recently spoken about qualifying being a weakness for you. How do you feel about that?
SV:
Well, I think everybody has the right to express his feelings and it was nothing new to me as Helmut spoke to me before he went public. I also know that I have to get better in that respect. And I know that I can. Having said that I was quite satisfied with my lap this afternoon. Unfortunately it was not fast enough.

Q: Is it a relief to know that this track is a driver’s track where a driver can make substantial difference during the race?
SV:
Well, I am starting from P11 and that is not great. But we have freedom of choice with the tyres and that can be of real benefit here. So it is not looking all that bad as this track is very demanding and a lot can happen in 44 laps. If you start from P11 in Monaco it is definitely much less good news than it is here.

Q: On Thursday you said that from now on the focus has to be on the championship. Is this a bitter set back?
SV:
No, not at all. Today no points are allocated.

Q: So what is your plan for the race?
SV:
To move forwards. Moving backwards cannot be our goal.
