He may have missed out on pole position to team mate Mark Webber on Saturday, but Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel had the final word in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, winning the race with consummate ease. Afterwards he spoke about his ‘close to perfect’ race, surpassing more records, and about the busy few days he has coming up...

Q: Sebastian, you’ve already sealed the championship but you still seem very hungry for wins…
Sebastian Vettel:
Seems so! (laughs) But the truth is: I get in the car and have fun. Today’s race was unbelievable - close to perfect. We knew that yesterday in qualifying - after the track improved significantly - caught us on the wrong foot. On top of that I didn’t really squeeze everything out of the car and haven’t been all too happy with myself, but today made good for that. We knew that the car would be very fast in the race, as we’ve been targeting that since Saturday - and there you had it! The set-up was just awesome and that gave us the chance to control the race from the front - from lap one. A very luxurious feeling!

Q: The gap to the rest - isn’t that something that in some ways irritates you?
SV:
A bit yes. I knew that I was able to handle the car very well on the soft tyres and tried to pull away as much as I could, just in case something unpredictable happened like a botched pit stop or a dramatic drop off of the tyres. It was important to get ahead of everybody immediately on the first lap to be able to control the race and do my own thing. Of course I could have slowed down a bit, but to be honest: it never feels good when others catch up! (laughs)

Q: Seven wins in a row and eleven wins so far this season - it looks like there could be another record in the offing. Is that something that you appreciate?
SV:
Well, I think it is still a bit difficult to understand what is going on with us this season. It will still take some time. Probably I am able to understand Michael’s (Schumacher) records better back then even when I was very young, but observed it from a distance because I know now that it is difficult to reflect on it from within.

Q: It was also the one hundredth podium for Red Bull Racing. How do you feel about that?
SV:
It is simply fantastic. We all have worked our way step-by-step from the bottom-up and have built a fantastic group of people along the way. It is a special feeling to belong to them. It seems we are getting stronger with every year! Awesome.

Q: The next couple of days will be quite busy for you as you’ll meet (Red Bull boss) Dietrich Mateschitz in Salzburg tomorrow to celebrate your championship win and then go back to the factory in Milton Keynes to do the same with the boys from the team…
SV:
That is pure pleasure. I am really looking forward to shaking hands with Mr Mateschitz - who made all this possible - and then have a good time with the boys in the factory before we all start to concentrate again on Austin, to go out and put on a good show for all our fans there!
