There’s been plenty of attention on Daniel Ricciardo at Monza, what with the Australian having recently been announced as Sebastian Vettel’s 2014 team mate at Red Bull. But Ricciardo showed that he’d lost none of his focus by taking his Toro Rosso to seventh on the grid. After another strong showing, Ricciardo spoke about his day and his chances for the race…

Q: Daniel, today was a pretty good day for you. How satisfied are you?
Daniel Ricciardo:
Yep, it was cool. The speed was there - and if you look at the sector times you don’t have to be an Einstein to know that we’re running quite low downforce, which should help us tomorrow either for attacking or defending. In any case I hope that our brave set-up will help us tomorrow.

Q: How brave was the set-up in terms of downforce?
DR:
Well, we are sliding a bit but that’s the path we’ve chosen - and I expect that it will be alright tomorrow. It is the same that we had on Friday - and then the long runs looked pretty promising. So we should be on the safe side in terms of tyre wear. We are expecting cooler temperatures for the race so that will definitely help us to give the tyres a bit of an easier life. (laughs)

Q: Was the car difficult to drive? We saw you sometimes in the gravel...
DR:
We (Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne) both cannot complain as we both made it into Q3. Sure, a fast car is always a bit tricky to drive so I had a bit of an off in Q2 in the second Lesmo corner - but I think overall it was a super afternoon in terms of pace. And with the high fuel at the start of the race things are getting slowed down, so it should be a bit easier to manage at the start.

Q: Tomorrow is not only about cooler conditions, but also the potential of rain. Would you prefer a wet race?
DR:
To be honest, we have a good car and I think we will do good in the wet and the dry. I am not too concerned about the conditions tomorrow.

Q: Do you think about Sebastian’s 2008 win here in the wet? The win that paved his way to F1 fame…
DR:
Ha, if it rains I will probably have it on my mind. But nevertheless I feel that we have a huge chance tomorrow to bag good points. Our top speed should help us. We know that this is a crucial factor on this track so we’ve set up the car around this parameter. I know that we could need more downforce in the second sector, but you always go with where the speed is! (laughs)

Q: Are you surprised that Toro Rosso did so well today?
DR:
No, of course not. We are on a steady upward curve but yes, it is the first time that we have managed to get both cars into Q3 in dry conditions. On some occasions I thought that we would make it into the top five - but it didn’t happen. In fact we should be very satisfied with what we achieved today and who we left behind. Today the whole team did a fantastic job - so let’s hope that we can keep that incredible team performance going in the race. When looking back at the last race we also had good race pace, but didn’t do well in qualifying - so we’ve fixed that today and nothing speaks against us having a strong race tomorrow. Maybe we can even find ourselves a bit deeper in the points than at Spa. Fingers crossed! (laughs)
