Williams FW34 - ear-less front brake ducts 07 July 2012
Williams started a trend this year with their front brakes ducts which don't have the usual ear inlets to help cool in the inside section of the drums. The design was copied by Sauber at the second winter test, appeared on the Ferrari in Montreal - despite it being the hardest race on brakes - and features in Caterham's big upgrade package at Silverstone. Airflow is instead fed through the space between the duct's big plate and the tyre (blue arrow), cutting negative drag in the important channel created by the wheel and the chassis.
