Mercedes F1 W03 - 'Coanda' exhausts 22 September 2012
In Singapore Mercedes finally introduced their new 'Coanda' exhausts - utilising the Coanda effect of airflow being attracted to nearby surfaces - after successful trials at last week's young driver test at Magny-Cours. Mercedes are in fact the last team to move to the downwashed exhaust set-up - complete with the sidepod bulges (left arrow) first introduced by McLaren - with the exhaust gases being deflected towards the gap between the diffuser and rear tyre (right arrow). This speeds up airflow through the diffuser and increases downforce. On Friday afternoon the team also introduced a new front wing with an additional cascade flap on the endplates.
