Force India's improved form powers him to team's maiden pole, points and podium at Spa, then makes surprise move to Ferrari as stand-in for the injured Massa. Struggles to get to grips with F60, failing to make Q3 or score points in five outings. Will become Italian team's 2010 reserve driver.

After being dropped by Renault, becomes number-one driver for new Force India team (formerly Spyker). Uncompetitive car means zero points, with a tenth place in Spain his best result of the year.

Early title hopes are quickly abandoned after Renault's car proves uncompetitive. Scores a well-deserved fourth place in Monaco, but finds himself increasingly out-paced by rookie team mate Kovalainen, casting doubt over his Formula One future.

Scores just one race win to team mate Fernando Alonso's seven, but is nevertheless key in Renault's successful title defence. Finishes fourth in drivers' championship.

Dream start to season with pole and victory for Renault in Melbourne, but then dogged by mix of poor luck and inability to match team mate Alonso. Further five podiums prove vital to Renault's constructors' championship. Fifth in the driver standings.

Post-race enquiry into timing mix-up in Brazil sees him awarded his maiden Grand Prix victory with Jordan. Car is uncompetitive elsewhere, prompting him to sign an early deal with Sauber for 2004.
