After brief stint as Pirelli tyre tester, returns to familiar role of McLaren test driver, making one race appearance for Sauber in Canada in place of injured Sergio Perez. Lands 2012 race drive with HRT.

Like fellow returnee Schumacher, struggles to attain performance level many had predicted. Retires seven times in 14 races and is dropped in favour of Nick Heidfeld for season's final five rounds.
