Ferrari 248 F1 - barge board detail 31 January 2006
The area around the front of the sidepods on the 248 F1 is one of the most deeply developed on the new car. The sidepods themselves (1) have shrunk yet again, their air intakes both smaller and higher (better for avoiding unwanted debris entering, as well as aerodynamically). The barge boards in front of the intakes are slightly larger, with an inclined upper profile, but feature the same sort of fins and winglets (2) introduced last season to improve airflow management in this area. Unique among the 2006 cars is the position of the mirrors (3), now placed on the foremost outer edge of the sidepods. This positioning reduces the turbulence affecting the airflow close to the cockpit, allowing that airflow to pass more cleanly towards the rear wing.
