Lotus E22 - intercooler exit duct 28 March 2014

From the start of pre-season testing all of the Renault-engined teams have been struggling with the cooling requirements of their new and very complicated 2014 power units. During testing, grinders and cutting equipment could be heard late into the night as teams modified bodywork. Any airflow used for cooling is airflow that cannot be used to create downforce, so every team pushes the limits. Cooling exits are all about finding the position on the car that does the least aerodynamic damage. However, sometimes teams simply need to find a solution and that is what Lotus have done in Malaysia with this intercooler exit duct. Yes it will improve the efficiency of the intercooler, but unfortunately its placement will also impact on the overall aerodynamic performance of the car.
