The Mexican has watched the British and 70th Anniversary Grands Prix from his sofa, having having tested positive for the virus in the run up to the first race at Silverstone. In his absence, Nico Hulkenberg has been driving in his place for the pink team.

However, he has only had mild symptoms throughout and on Wednesday said that he was 100% ready to race if he was given the all-clear.

And on Thursday, the team shared the news that Perez had taken a throat and nostril swab and delivered a negative result.

“The FIA have confirmed that Checo can return to the F1 paddock and he will compete for the team in this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix,” said Racing Point.

Racing Point say Perez had his pre-event test on Wednesday, as did the whole team, and then travelled to Barcelona. He received his negative result on Thursday morning, ahead of media day.

Speaking on Wednesday before the test result was made public, Perez said: “I’ve definitely missed racing and it was hard to watch from the outside. I can’t wait to get on track, hopefully this weekend.

“I’m very lucky that I’ve only had mild symptoms, so I’ve been able to keep training and make sure that I’m ready to jump back behind the wheel of the car. I’m very glad I had my tablet to keep me entertained too, though!”

It is understood Hulkenberg remains on standby if required to step in again.
