Monaco stats - Hamilton takes second Principality victory

29 May 2016

With victory in Monaco, Lewis Hamilton became the 15th driver to win more than once on the tricky street course. We take a look at the rest of the stats...
  • Until his bungled pit stop, it looked like Daniel Ricciardo might follow up his first ever pole position with a first Monaco victory, but in the end it was car 44 - Lewis Hamilton - who came through for his 44th career victory.

  • It was Hamilton’s second ever victory on the streets of Monte Carlo, and comes eight years after his first. And just like his first, the reigning world champion did something that has now only been done three times in the last decade - he won from somewhere other than pole position.

  • Hamilton had gone eight races without a win, but his victory on Sunday means he maintains his incredible record of having never gone more than 10 races in his F1 career without a win. It also continues his remarkable streak of having won at least one Grand Prix in every season in which he has raced.
  • Monaco was the 87th race that Hamilton has led in his F1 career, taking him past his hero Ayrton Senna for second on the all-time list. Only Michael Schumacher (142) has led more races than the Briton.

  • After bagging third at Monaco in 2014, Daniel Ricciardo scored a best ever finish in the Principality – and a first podium of the season - with second place. It was also only the second time in his career that he’s finished second.

  • Sergio Perez meanwhile picked up his first Monaco rostrum with a brilliant run to third. The Mexican has now stood on an F1 podium six times – three times each with Sauber and Force India. He has now scored more podiums than McLaren since he was dropped by the Woking team at the end of 2013…
  • Perez’s team mate Nico Hulkenberg is of course still without an F1 rostrum, but he did pull off a brilliant last lap overtake of Nico Rosberg to sixth place and his first points in five races – and also relegate his fellow German to his worst classified finish since Hungary last year when he was eighth.

  • Rosberg has now been off the podium for two successive races - something that last happened in Italy and Singapore in 2015.

  • McLaren celebrated the 50th anniversary of their first race in F1 with their second double points finish of the season. For Fernando Alonso, fifth is his best result since last year in Hungary, while Jenson Button finished ninth for the second race in a row.

  • The final world championship point went to Felipe Massa, who is now the only driver to have scored points in every race this season. Williams team mate Valtteri Bottas had been the other, but the Finn could only manage 12th.
  • After his spectacular crash in last year’s Monaco race, Max Verstappen’s tumultuous relationship with the Principality continued on Sunday. This year’s race-ending incident at Massenet was the teenage Dutchman’s third trip into the barriers over the weekend.

  • Two teams recorded double retirements for the first time this season in Monaco: Sauber and Renault. The former are still yet to score a point in 2016.

  • And finally, safety car driver Bernd Maylander celebrated his 45th birthday on Sunday. His present? The chance to ‘lead’ the Monaco Grand Prix for eight laps… It was the first time in the history of the race that it has got underway behind the safety car.
