In numbers - the European Grand Prix

Did you know that Baku is lowest-lying capital in the world? Or that it will be only the sixth official host venue of the European Grand Prix? We present the key stats and figures ahead of this weekend's historic race...

The year the maiden Grand Prix of Europe took place, at Brands Hatch in the United Kingdom.

The number of times the European Grand Prix has been run prior to this weekend's inaugural race in Azerbaijan.

The number of venues - in addition to Baku and Brands Hatch - to have staged the event. They are the Nurburgring in Germany, Donington Park in the UK, and the Spanish venues of Jerez and Valencia.

The Nurburgring has hosted the European Grand Prix a record dozen times (1984, 1995-6, 1999-2007), followed by Valencia on five occasions (2008-2012). On two races apiece are Brands Hatch (1983, 1985) and Jerez (1994, 1997), while Donington has featured just once (1993).

Ayrton Senna's winning margin, in seconds, at that sole Donington race, which remains arguably the most famous Grand Prix of Europe, thanks in large part to the Brazilian's stunning opening lap. In treacherous conditions Senna overtook the cars of Michael Schumacher, Karl Wendlinger, Damon Hill and Alain Prost.

Schumacher may have been beaten that day, but he has highest win count in the European Grand Prix with six victories. Next up is Fernando Alonso on three, followed by Rubens Barrichello and Sebastian Vettel on two apiece.
