Palmer to get new chassis in Canada after Monaco crash

Renault have prepared a new chassis for Jolyon Palmer for the upcoming race in Canada, following the British rookie's heavy shunt in Monaco.

Palmer crashed out of the race on the eighth lap in Monte Carlo after losing control in wet conditions, resulting in two heavy impacts with the barriers - the first on the pit straight and the second at Ste Devote.

“The car hit the barriers quite hard at an oblique angle which damaged the front of the chassis,” confirmed Renault technical director Nick Chester. “Since we have a new chassis available it makes sense to introduce it. Fortunately, [chassis] 04 was pretty far along on its build so we only needed to complete fuel cell installation and wiring for it to be ready for Canada.”

Palmer’s team mate Kevin Magnussen also retired from Sunday’s race after separate incidents at Rascasse [where he tangled with Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat] and Mirabeau, but Chester confirmed the Dane only damaged “bolt-on parts”.

After their first double retirement of the season, Renault remain ninth in the constructors’ standings heading to Montreal.
