Toro Rosso announced on Monday the appointment of Giorgio Ascanelli as the team’s new technical director. Ascanelli, who has been working in a similar role for Maserati Corse, will replace temporary stand-in Alex Hitzinger as technical chief.

Ascanelli arrives at the Italian squad with a great deal of Formula One experience. The 48 year-old Italian was a Ferrari race engineer for many years, before becoming head of R&D for the team and has also enjoyed brief stints at Benetton and McLaren. During his career, Ascanelli was also race engineer to Toro Rosso co-owner and ex-Formula One driver Gerhard Berger.

Hitzinger will now return to his original role in charge of Red Bull Technology’s Advanced Technology Department.
