Silverstone day two - Bottas concludes young driver test on top 13 Jul 2012
Williams reserve Valtteri Bottas stayed on top of the timesheets on Friday as this weeks two-day young driver test at Silverstone came to close.
Only Williams and Marussia were in action, following HRTs departure on Thursday. The two teams used the International layout of the British track, which is much shorter than the Grand Prix configuration.
Bottass best of 48.963s was just under a second quicker than Max Chilton, who was second for Marussia. With the weather remaining dry, the Finn managed to complete 170 laps in the FW34 during the day.
It was another good test for the team here at Silverstone, today running on the shorter International Circuit, said Dominic Harlow, Williams senior operations engineer. We were able to get a good evaluation of several new components across various systems on the car as part of the on-going development, alongside giving Valtteri more mileage in the car.
Chilton, who was in action during the afternoon, covered 52 laps in the MR01. The 21 year-old Britons fellow Marussia young driver and GP2 team mate, Rio Haryanto, occupied the final slot on the timesheets in third. The Indonesian 19 year-old completed 79 laps as he worked through a set-up programme and an evaluation of the new MR-01 upgrade package.
I have thoroughly enjoyed spending the past two days here at Silverstone keeping a close eye on our two young drivers and I have been very impressed with what I have seen of Max and Rio, said team principal John Booth. Both drivers completed over 350km over the two days, the majority of which was in the dry, and they have done an outstanding job given their relative lack of experience.
Their running has also helped us to answer some of the set-up questions which were carried over from the British Grand Prix weekend, so it has been a very valuable experience all round. I have been particularly pleased with the way Max and Rio approached this opportunity and coped well with the environment of the car and the team.
Williams and Marussia will now return to their factories before heading over to Germany for next weekends Formula 1 Grosser Preis Santander von Deutschland 2012, which takes place at Hockenheim from July 20-22.
Unofficial Friday test times from Silverstone:
1. Valtteri Bottas, Williams, 48.963s, 170 Laps
2. Max Chilton, Marussia, 49.932s, 52 Laps
