Vettel receives time penalty, demoted to fifth 22 Jul 2012
Red Bulls Sebastian Vettel has been handed a 20-second time penalty by the stewards in Germany for his pass on McLarens Jenson Button during the closing stages of Sundays race. Vettel had finished the Hockenheim event in second, but the addition of the penalty leaves him fifth in the results.
The stewards decided the German gained an advantage after leaving the track at the exit of the hairpin as he attempted to overtake Button on Lap 66. They elected to give him a drive-through penalty, which when imposed after the race means 20 seconds is added to the penalised drivers finishing time.
As a result of Vettels penalty, Button is promoted to second in the results. Lotuss Kimi Raikkonen moves up into third and Saubers Kamui Kobayashi takes fourth.
