Colour Codes

Yellow

Default display colour.

Red

Indicates cars exiting and entering the pits. When a car leaves the pits the word OUT is displayed in the time column. The car number and driver name appears in red until that car goes through the first sector when it will revert to its normal colour. When a car enters the pits the words IN PIT are displayed in the time column. The car number and driver name is shown in red and reverts to its normal colour after a short period of time.

White

Indicates the most recent information available for that driver (e.g. a white sector time is the information for the sector just completed).

Green

Indicates a personal best for that driver and may relate to individual sector times as well as a lap time.

Magenta

Indicates the overall best in that session and may relate to individual sector times as well as a lap time.

Grey

Used in qualifying only. Indicates drivers who have been knocked out in the first or second qualifying phase and are therefore no longer eligible to participate in the session.

STOP

Appears in place of the sector information in the event of a car not completing that sector, indicating that in all probability the car has stopped on the circuit.

OUT

Appears in place of the sector information to indicate that a car has just exited the pits.

IN PIT

Appears in place of the sector information to indicate a car has just entered the pits. A line showing the personal best time in each sector for that car in the current session is displayed in yellow after the car has been in the pits for 15 seconds.

Race Info

The screen appears at the start of the Race with the cars in grid order. On the first lap of the Race the screen will update the order as the cars cross each sector position.

Column Descriptions


Position (P)

Current position in the session.

Car Number

Car number.

Name

Driver's name.

Gap

Difference between that driver and the leader the last time that driver crossed the finish line.

Interval

Difference between that driver and the driver immediately above the last time they crossed the finish line.
N.B. If the interval the last time they crossed the finish line is less than the previous time then it will be shown in white (i.e. the driver is gaining on the one in front). If the interval the last time they crossed the finish line is equal to or greater than the previous time then it will be shown in yellow (i.e. the driver is either static or losing ground to the one in front).
N.B. The Gap & Interval column for the leading driver always shows the number of laps completed, rather than the Gap and Interval information for that driver.

Lap Time

The last completed lap time.

Sector information

As a car laps the circuit its time is recorded at three positions, known as Sector 1, Sector 2 and Sector 3 (Finish line).

Sector 1

The time taken from the finish line to the first sector position.

Sector 2

The time taken from the first sector position to the second sector position.

Sector 3 (Finish line)

The time taken from the second sector position to the finish line.

Pit

Indicates the number of pit stops currently completed in the race by that driver.

As each car crosses the finish line the car number and drivers name is shown in white. When the leader crosses the finish line all other names revert to yellow.

After 10 laps if a driver has not completed 90% of the distance covered by the leader then the position number does not appear.

Weather/Speed Info


Clicking on the Weather & Speed tab on the left hand side of the screen allows you to select the Weather & Speed display. To return to the Live Timing Screen click on the Live tab. The Weather & Speed tab appears during all sessions.

Figures for six sets of weather data are displayed - track temperature, air temperature, wet / dry (where '1' indicates rain, '0' no rain), wind speed, humidity and (air) pressure. In addition the circuit map and arrow indicate wind direction. The graph shows how conditions have changed over the course of the session. It will rotate between the various sets of data, unless you click on a specific item.

In addition, the screen shows the six best straight-line speeds achieved in that session at four different, predetermined points on the circuit. Note, they are not necessarily the outright fastest speeds achieved - these may be reached at other points on the circuit.

Lap Chart

Clicking on the Lap Chart tab on the left hand side of the screen allows you to select the Lap Chart display. To return to the Live Timing Screen click on the Live tab. The Lap Chart tab only appears during a race session.

The screen shows a list of drivers in grid order and a line extends from each driver across the screen as the race progresses. The line will bend up and down the screen depending on the driver's position in the race. The line at the top of the screen indicates that driver is in the lead.

The lap numbers are displayed across the top and the highlighted band shows which drivers are currently in points positions. By hovering the mouse over a driver's name, the line for that driver is highlighted to assist in following the line across the page. If a driver stops and pulls out of the race, the line for that driver stops on that lap.

Track Status

Green

The session is running smoothly.

Yellow

There is an incident somewhere on the circuit. Yellow flags are being used to warn the drivers.

SCS

Yellow flags are out following an incident and the Safety Car is on Standby.

SCD

Safety Car has been Deployed due to a serious incident.

Red

The practice session has been aborted or the race suspended due to a serious incident.

Help


General information: the Live Timing System requires Java version 1.3.1 or greater. Mac users should use OS X with Safari, Firefox or Netscape browsers.

If you are having trouble viewing the Live Timing System you may find the following information useful:

Q: I can't see the Live Timing System on the page. I just get an empty outlined box

A: The Live Timing System is a Java Applet. You will need to have a Java Runtime Environment installed for your browser to display the page correctly. Click here to visit the Sun Java web site where you can install a Java Runtime Environment by clicking on the "Get it now" link.

Q: I can see the timing information but it only updates every 30 seconds. I thought it was meant to be live?

A: The Live Timing System has two methods of update. When the page is initially loaded the Java Applet tries to connect to the formula1.com streaming server on network port 4321 for live updates. Some corporate networks or firewalls will block connections to this port. If this is the case and the Applet cannot connect to the live streaming server, so it will connect using the web and refreshes every 30 seconds instead. You can determine how the Applet is connected by looking at the small coloured connection indicator at the bottom left of the Live Timing System screen.

If it is yellow you are connected to the live timing streaming server and every time it receives data it will flash green. If it is red it could not connect to the live timing streaming server and will update over the web every 30 seconds, and again flash green when it receives data. If it is grey the session is over and you have been disconnected and you should press Refresh on your browser before the next session begins. If the indicator shows that you cannot connect to the live timing streaming server you should contact your System Administrator and ask them to open TCP port 4321 for you.
