The Dutchman is generally behind more experienced team mate Charles Pic in the early races and often finds himself on the back row behind the faster Marussias. Gets into P2 in Monaco qualifying though and takes a dogged 15th in the race.

Fourth season in GP2, this time with Caterham Racing. Scores two wins and six podiums on his way to sixth overall. Also serves as Caterham's F1 reserve and makes free practice appearances at six Grands Prix.

Moves into World Series by Renault, finishing sixth in the drivers' championship. Has his first Formula One tests for both Super Aguri and Spyker.

A third successive season in the Formula Three Euro Series finally yields a win and four podiums. He also finishes second at the prestigious F3 Masters Event at Zandvoort in his homeland.

Second season in the Formula Three Euro Series is almost identical to first – finishes ninth in the final points standings with two podiums.
