Gradually adjusts to life further back on the grid. Performs admirably against Caterham team mate Kovalainen and his standout 11th-place finish in the final race in Brazil makes him a hero as it lifts the team above rivals Marussia in the standings.

With intended Renault partner Kubica absent through injury, steps up to the plate with consistently quick and mature performances, scoring first F1 podium at Australian opener. Results rapidly tail off though as innovative R31 becomes increasingly uncompetitive.
