The 2003 FIA GT champion, Thomas Biagi, will be testing for Midland in Spain next month, the team have announced. The Jerez outing will be the Italian driver’s first Formula One experience.

“After a successful career in World GT, I’m delighted to be able to demonstrate my level of performance with a Formula One car for the first time,” said Biagi, who won his 2003 title with six wins and is currently leading the 2005 series standings.

“In recognition of what will be an important step in my career, I have begun preparing myself physically and mentally for this test with an intensive training program. I would like to thank the team for giving to me this fantastic opportunity and for believing in my potential.”

Prior to moving into GT racing, Biagi’s single-seater experience included stints in Formula Three and International Formula 3000. Arguably his best season was 2001, when he finished as runner up in the Euro 3000 series.

Colin Kolles, the Midland team’s Managing Director, commented: "Thomas Biagi has been very successful in different motorsport categories, especially in the FIA GT Championship. I’m glad that we are able to offer him his first F1 test so that he can show his potential.”

Midland, who will make their official transformation from Jordan on November 15, have already signed Dutchman Nicky Pastorelli as their third and test driver for next season and earlier this week former Minardi star Christijan Albers was confirmed for a 2006 race drive.
