Albon’s Dutch GP qualifying result under threat as potential car issue is referred to the stewards

Alex Albon faces a wait to see if his qualifying result at the Dutch Grand Prix will stand after a potential breach of the technical regulations was noted by F1’s governing body, the FIA.

Albon impressed throughout Saturday afternoon’s session at the Zandvoort Circuit, with the Thai-British racer progressing to the pole position shootout and eventually securing eighth on the grid.

He did so in a heavily updated Williams, which this weekend features an upgraded diffuser, sidepod inlet, engine cover, central air intake and floor body.

However, a report from Jo Bauer, the FIA F1 Technical Delegate, noted a potential issue relating to that floor body post-qualifying, with the matter being passed on to the stewards.

The stewards then issued an official summons requiring both Albon and a Williams team representative to report to the panel to discuss the matter at 18:30 local time.

“After the qualifying session the aerodynamic component and bodywork areas were checked on car number 23,” read the document signed by Bauer.

“The floor body was found to lie outside the regulatory volume mentioned in Article 3.5.1 a). I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration.”

In the meantime, the stewards have confirmed that they will permit Albon’s team mate, Logan Sargeant, to start Sunday’s race after he missed qualifying in the wake of a heavy FP3 crash that wrecked his own updated car.
